Climbing towards conservation was an expedition that brought five underprivileged girls from Kirinyaga County on a transformative journey up the mountain. Organized by Kaveri Shah, the project combined outdoor adventure with hands-on conservation education. The expedition took place during June of 2025, when the girls and three of their teachers were given the opportunity to attempt an educational hike up to Mt. Kenya’s summit, Pt. Lenana (4985 masl). The girls learned about Mt. Kenya’s wildlife, the impact of climate change, and how to protect the environment around them. The project operated within a 300,000/= budget, which was raised through a fundraiser in 2023 where Kaveri Shah climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro’s summit, Uhuru Peak (5985 masl), and Mt. Kenya’s summit, Pt. Lenana (4985 masl). The project aimed to give the girls confidence, leadership skills, and a deep connection to nature, aligning with our mission to empower youth to speak up and act for animals and the planet. This project shows how conservation can be taught not just in classrooms but also on the trail, where change begins step by step.
